5 essential features in the workshop stand for bicycles, e-bikes

Sure, now that you have been repairing e-bikes for a while, you have realized that not all bicycle stands respond efficiently. E-bikes are heavier than traditional bikes, and the bicycle stands we have been using until now, are not suitable because they are hard to handle with e-bikes or these supports can even damage the bicycle.

In this article, we will review the five desirable features of bicycle stands so that your work will be easier and more comfortable, the support does not damage the bicycle and helps to avoid injuries.

The clamp

Not all clamps are suitable for holding e-bikes to the bicycle stand. By having a heavier weight than traditional bicycles, tensions and forces are generated, which means that, depending on the angle, the bicycle may suffer harm or, the clamp may not be appropriate to grab carbon fibreglass frames.

Therefore, the mooring clamp has the following characteristics recommended:

  • A clam wider than the ones we used to see. With a longer clamp, the pressure and clamping are distributed along the contact surface, avoiding excessive pressure on any of the edges.
  • A thick, wide, and resistant rubber that does not slip so that the clamp allows the bicycle to be attached to the e-bike support in a progressive way and prevents the bike from moving.
  • The calliper of the clamp should be wide enough to fit your e-bike frame. Usually, e-bikes have batteries built into the frame, so they are much broad than non-electrics.
  • The distance between the clamp and the pillar of the e-bike support should be large enough to hold wider bicycles then the bicycles will not hit the support pillar with the pedals.

A stable and strong stand for e-bikes

Lift an e-bike of more than 20 kg and be able to handle it according to our needs: turn and change the height of the stand, access at difficult points, rotate, and change the battery, among others, must have extra stability and hardness that the bike stands we worked with up to now do not have.

A robust stand, should be built of high-quality resistant materials. In our support, we use lifting columns made of steel with a force of 800N (up to 80 kg of weight) in the standard version and anodized aluminium of 1000N (up to 8100kg of weight) in the Heavy Duty version (see characteristics of the supports).).

It is also necessary that the support for e-bikes be stable. To achieve this stability, manufacturers opt for two options: wide and heavy bases or fixing the stand to the ground. Big and heavy bases can be moved harder from one place to another, but only some models allow lifting more than 25 kg without being fixed to the ground. Automatic lifting and not manually

To opt for this feature depends on the number of bicycles you usually repair per day and, of course, their weight. And although it seems like an expendable feature, the truth is that it is the most desirable and practical functionality.. In the end, we are lifting the weight of a 6-year-old in an awkward position several times a day.

But it also has additional advantages, and that is why some models of support for e-bikes, also called electric bicycle lifts (bike lifts), can:

  • Memorize a specific height.
  • Lift the bicycle in a more precise way.
  • Operate with the e-bike support using pedal controls.
  • Place the bike in a ground position to level the saddle.

Stands that allow bicycles to turn

In my opinion, I find this function most useful. It is an indisputable advantage to put the bike at the angle that interests me, to fix any part of the bike without awkward and uncomfortable positions. And, of course, if you change the height of the bicycle support, you can also work on a stool for longer times.

Many robust models have this functionality, and they are not more expensive. Note it down!

An anti-entrapment safety system

Maybe, this functionality is the most unheard-of feature among e-bike stands, but worth it. Whether you use an automatic lifting system and this encounters an obstacle, it must be able to stop automatically or, in the event of an error, it will continue to advance until one of both, support or the obstacle, gives way. This action can cause an accident or damage the bicycle, so when we work in a workshop with a bike, which costs more than 2,000 euros, it is a situation to avoid. With an ISP system you have it solved.

We see that the new stands for electric bikes are designed to solve most problems of handling heavy bikes. You can find some e-bike stands on the market that meets some of these characteristics, but only a few meet all of them.
